Week of October 24th, 2016

De Young Field Trip

This Friday, October 28th, we will go on a field trip to the de Young Museum to participate in their Get Smart with Art program.  Thank you to the parents who have signed up to drive!

To prepare for the field trip, please cancel any hot lunch orders and send your child to school with a bagged lunch.  If you have already ordered a “field trip lunch,” don’t worry. I’ve placed your order and it will arrive on Friday.  Email me if you are unsure if you have ordered one or not.  Also, please make sure that your child dresses in layers on Friday, as the weather in San Francisco can be unpredictable! Thanks very much.

The Book Fair is Coming Soon!

The annual Edna Maguire Book Fair will be held next week, from October 31st to November 4th.

We are looking for lots of help to run the book fair. The leaders will be there and you will be trained on what to do, so all you need to really do is sign up and show up. It’s a lot of fun and the children are just so excited to buy and read books.  We need 150 Volunteers to make it run smoothly, so please grab a shift.

It is the responsibility of the 4th Grade Class to assist with the Cafe ‪on Thursday, November 3rd from 5-8pm. The proceeds from the cafe will go to the Class of 2018 to assist with the funding for activities such as Sutter's Fort and Walker Creek.

Please go the Sign Up Genius page where parents can sign up to volunteer and well as provide supplies/items for the cafe. Please sign up as it is imperative we get everyone to participate and volunteer!

There will also be a book talk for adults during the Book Fair. Annie Barrows is coming in to discuss her adult book, The Truth According to Us: A Novel. Her visit will be on November 1st from 2-3 PM in the library. Please come join us. We also have a couple dozen copies of her book to pre-sell. They are $17.44 each. We are happy to meet anyone at pick up or drop off time in the front office. 20% of the proceeds go to Edna. We can also use the PTA Programs Cubby to hand off books/collect money if the timing does not work to meet up.

Halloween Festivities

On Monday, October 31st, we will have several Halloween festivities at school.  The Halloween parade will begin at 9:00am.  Please join us! Kids should arrive at school in their costumes if they would like to dress up.  They should also bring a change of clothes of the remainder of the day.
Later in the day, we will have a class party and carve pumpkins!  The party will begin at 12:30pm.  All parents are invited! Please help your child by sending a pumpkin to school by Friday, October 28th.  I would love to have many parents attend the party and help with the carving of the pumpkins.  Please see the Sign Up Genius if you are willing and able to attend the party or donate snacks and carving materials.  Thank you so much for your help and support.  This will be a very exciting and fun day at school!

When helping your child pick out a costume for school, please remember to avoid gory or excessively scary themes.  This year, we also cannot allow students to wear clown costumes.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Parent teacher conferences will be held during the weeks of November 7th and 14th.  Please remember that we will have early dismissal each day during this conference period and students will be released at 2:00pm.  Please plan for pick up accordingly. If you have not already signed up for a conference, please visit the Sign Up Genius to select a date and time.  I look forward to meeting with you!

Sutter’s Fort

The planning for our incredible Sutter’s Fort trip has begun!  This hands on, immersive field trip requires a great deal of preparation and parent support.  Please mark your calendars for the mandatory parent meeting, which will be held on January 25th, 2017 at 6:30pm.  At least one parent from each family needs to attend this meeting to ensure that your family knows how to prepare for the trip.

This year, we will also need to sew some costume elements ahead of time in order to be able to provide them for the entire class. If you know how to sew and are interested in helping out, please contact me or Cara Guyot.  She will be organizing a few sewing parties to get us ready for our big trip.  Thank you, Cara, and everyone who is planning to help out!

Lost and Found Sale

We will have our first lost and found sale this week from October 26-28.  All proceeds will go towards buying another rack and bins to help keep the lost and found items more organized and clean.

Please note that this will be our last lost and found sale.  Starting in December, all lost and found items will be donated to a non-profit organization on the first Friday of every month.
